Lamp cord, extension cords are not rated 600 volt.
Use copper wire only. Aluminum wire is fire risk and should be avoided or installed by professional.

Copper ground wire.
Every device, load, metal enclosure etc must be grounded. Ground wire must be continuous throughout installation, never switched on-off, never used as a Neutral wire.
Generally ... use same size as other wire in circuit

Non metallic flexible cables must carry ground wire, but do not have hazard of short circuit causing injury from shock. Armored steel cable can be used as a grounded connection, and will protect wires from damage. Metal can be energized from an insulation failure.
All conduit ...metal, plastic ... flexible and rigid ... must be attached to structure, and attached to enclosures, boxes.
Movement, damage and deterioration are major cause of electrical failure.

Electrical tools must be insulated.
Always best to disconnect power, but insulation failure, lack of proper grounding, grounded neutral, lack of GFCI, out-of-code wiring, generator operating without transfer switch, and other problems still pose a risk to anyone working on electric power ... even when breaker is off.

600 volt 12 ga Stranded wire ot THHN wire is good for conduit with multiple wires ... but stranded cannot be installed under screw terminals on outlets, switches, timers etc without risk ... of heat causing splayed strands ....that come loose ... and begin to arc. Connect stranded to short piece of solid copper wire, and attach solid to screw terminal. Do not solder residential or commercial wiring.
Project wire, extension cords, thermostat, bell and automotive wire are not rated for residential or commercial wiring. Only wire maked 600 volt can be used for permanent household wiring.

Protect wiring from damage
Use nipper instead of pliers or screwdriver for removing staples (and nails). Do not damage cable or wires inside cable.

Black Hot wire from breaker box connects to darks screws located on same side as break-away fin.
Each 120volt electric box has only 1 Hot wire.
Take photo of wiring, separate wires for testing, and then test each wire to bare ground wire, and tester will light up on 120V Hot.
Load wire going to light connects to brass screw opposite the switch.
Bare ground wire connects to green screw
White neutral wire connects to silver screw opposite the pilot light.
What is neutral wire: Neutral wires are the white wires that are twisted together and covered with wire connector and pushed to back of electric box.
If box does not have neutral wires, the pilot will not work.
Unknown if pilot is ON only when switch has power
Pilot light will function differently if device installed in place of 2nd 3-way on Load side of circuit

Single outlet GFCI. Pilot light is ON when device has power.
When GFCI trips, then pilot is OFF. Wiring is identical to ordinary GFCI outlet, and can replace any ordinary GFCI device
Difference: pilot light light switches shown above, the pilot is ON only when light switch is ON.

How to wire combination switch receptacle
If you are replacing ordinary switch that has 2 wires, one of the wires is Hot and other is Load. Remove switch, turn power ON, tape tester leads to wood sticks, and test each wire to bare ground wire. Tester lights up on Hot.
Outlet works all the time, and switch controls separate light, and does not control outlet.

1) Polarized outlet has a wide blade and narrow blade. Black Hot wire from breaker box connects to screws that are on same side as narrow blade. Notice also that screws on Hot side of device have a break-away fin. If fin is removed, then add a wire that connects both screws. Each 120volt electric box has only 1 Hot wire that tests 120V to ground wire. Load wire going to light connects to brass screw opposite the switch. |
If your switch does not have 2 screws on Hot side, then this wiring is not possible
Hot side has the narrow outlet blade.
Review instructions above for basic wiring
1) Use screwdriver or pliers to remove break-away fin between Hot side screws.
If Hot side does not have break-away fin, then wiring is not possible.
2) Add a jumper wire between brass load screw and outlet screw as shown in diagram
